Sara Villatoro – Criminal Justice Major, LSA President

09.13.2024 | By: Texas Wesleyan University

Sara Villatoro, a dynamic criminal justice and sociology double major at Texas Wesleyan University, exemplifies the spirit of leadership and community engagement. Set to graduate in spring 2025, Sara has already made significant contributions to campus life, serving as the President of the Latinx Students Association (LSA), a President Ambassador and the Rams Ambassador.

Sara's academic journey began with an impressive start. She graduated high school with not only her diploma, but also an associate degree. Her academic prowess was further recognized when she received a full-ride scholarship for her first semester at Texas Wesleyan University. "Texas Wesleyan had a partnership with my high school. A recruiter came and introduced the [early college high school] scholarship. I signed up and received the scholarship!" Sara explained.

Being a first-generation student was a challenge for Sara, as her mom doesn’t speak English. However, she has a great support system from her family. They believe in her and help her in different ways that have helped her push through and be where she at today.

Sara's most notable achievement on campus has been leading the Latinx Student Association. Her motivation stems from her experiences as a Ram Ambassador, " want to create a home for the new incoming Hispanic students where they can feel safe and connect with other students that share the same cultures."

Sara reflects on her journey from being an introvert to extrovert, attributing much of her growth to her experiences as a tour guide and her active involvement around Texas Wesleyan. She shared, "I think I wouldn’t be who I am if I went to a bigger university." This sentiment resonates with many students at Texas Wesleyan where the close-knit community fosters a sense of belonging and comfort. Sara describes the environment as "homie," emphasizing how the smaller campus has encouraged her and others to open up and connect more deeply with one another. This intimate setting not only nurtures personal growth but also cultivates a supportive TXWES family that feels like home.
