Two Fort Worth students are taking a swing at college – thanks to a new partner scholarship between Texas Wesleyan University and the Ben Hogan Foundation that covers the full cost of tuition, fees and books. 

Jacey Patton, a senior at Temple Christian School, and Anthony Harper II, a senior homeschool student, both received the new scholarship, which is annually renewable. The scholars were named at a ceremony at the Ben Hogan Learning Center in Fort Worth, Wednesday, April 16.

“We are absolutely delighted to be partners in this scholarship with the Ben Hogan Foundation,” President Frederick G. Slabach said at the ceremony.

Texas Wesleyan and the Ben Hogan Foundation each contribute 50 percent of the cost of the scholarship, which covers four full years. Candidates are chosen by The First Tee and reviewed by the university and foundation.

“This scholarship is the largest the Ben Hogan Foundation has ever done,” Robert Stennett, executive director of the Ben Hogan Foundation, said.

The program is the largest privately funded scholarship program at Texas Wesleyan. The Foundation has made a four-year commitment to sponsor five scholarships.

"This venture between the Ben Hogan Foundation, First Tee of Fort Worth and Texas Wesleyan will change lives," Stennett said at the scholarship announcement in November. "It is a partnership that would make Mr. Hogan very proud."

The scholarship also includes a mentorship component. Dean Williams (for Harper) and Mark Kalpakis (for Patton) will serve as the first mentors. Both men are leaders in the oil and gas industry.

“The fact that the Hogan Foundation will partner with Texas Wesleyan on something as important as this shows that Texas has a real appreciation for what we’re doing,” Slabach said in November. “This partnership with the Ben Hogan Foundation is quite a feather in Texas Wesleyan’s cap.”
