Texas Wesleyan Board Approves Application Process to Transition to NCAA Division II

FORT WORTH, Texas — The Texas Wesleyan University Board of Trustees has authorizied the university to formally apply to become part of NCAA Division II athletics. Due to the university’s strong academic profile, sound financial position and modern athletic facilities, TXWES is well positioned to elevate to NCAA Division II. If accepted, Texas Wesleyan would continue competing in the NAIA through the 2027-28 academic year and begin NCAA Division II competition in 2028-29.
“This is a strategic and well-timed opportunity for Texas Wesleyan,” said Ricky Dotson, director of athletics. “Our programs reflect sustained competitive success, strong academic performance by our student-athletes and an institutional commitment to excellence that aligns with NCAA Division II values. We are well positioned organizationally, competitively and culturally to take this next step.”
Texas Wesleyan has a long history of athletic success with 20 NAIA conference championships since 2018, as well as a comprehensive approach to student-athlete development. The university’s athletic philosophy emphasizes academic achievement, sportsmanship and a positive game-day environment closely aligned with NCAA standards.
Board Chair Glenn Lewis said the decision reflects both institutional readiness and long-term strategy.
“This vote affirms our confidence in Texas Wesleyan’s academic strength, financial model and athletic infrastructure,” Lewis said. “Moving forward with the application process enhances our visibility, strengthens academic and athletic outcomes and reinforces our position as a leading university in the region.”
In fact, geographic location was one of several major factors in the decision. Texas Wesleyan currently competes in a nationally-dispersed NAIA conference with only three Texas-based institutions, requiring teams to travel extensively across the country. Across Texas, NCAA Division II has more than a dozen universities participating. This would reduce TXWES travel demands, increased local competitive rivalries and improve the student-athlete experience. The regional footprint is also expected to strengthen campus student and Ram-fan engagement by allowing more Rams to participate in game-day traditions and athletic events.
Additionally, Texas Wesleyan’s strong brand recognition in Fort Worth and beyond is another contributing factor to make the move to NCAA. Currently, the university attracts student-athletes from across the United States and internationally, while supporting more than 650 student-athletes competing in 23 sports. NCAA Division II affiliation is expected to further enhance recruitment and institutional visibility.
Texas Wesleyan’s facilities, athletic department leadership and operational readiness support the application. The university has demonstrated the capacity to meet NCAA Division II requirements, including expanded scholarship structures. Additional updates will be shared as the process advances.
