Emergency Alerts are alerts sent out by the university to notify the campus community of emergency situations they need to be aware of occurring on campus. They can be sent out through cell phone, text, email and landlines. Sign up for these notifications and choose which way to be notified. Only numbers you put in the drop-down box marked voice or text emergency alert will be notified.

Here’s what to do when you receive an alert and what each emergency alert means.

Active Shooter Emergency Alert:

Active Shooter – An Active Shooter is an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area.

If you receive this alert, you should act immediately. You will need to Run, Hide, or Fight. If unable to run to a safe location, hide in a room, lock or barricade the door, turn off lights and silence cell phones. Look for possible weapons to fight if the actor enters your room. Lastly, Fight if no other options. Fight with aggression to end the threat.

Shelter in place will be used in multiple situations where the police may be looking for or chasing a suspect, chemical agent in the air, an armed suspicious person in the area, reports of a dangerous situation on campus, or for any reason outdoor traffic needs to be limited.

Severe Weather Warning Emergency Alert:

Severe Weather – Any dangerous weather situation with the potential to cause damage, serious social disruption, or loss of human life.

If you receive this alert, you should be aware of the high potential for hail, tornadoes, and high winds. Going inside and monitor news and weather for emergency updates.

Tornado Warning Emergency Alert:

Tornado Warning – A tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar. There is imminent danger to life and property.

If you receive this alert you should move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, avoiding windows and protecting yourself from flying debris. Be aware of safe locations on campus which are listed in the Emergency Information booklets or on the security website under Severe Weather Shelters.

Winter Weather School Closing:

Winter Weather – Severe weather that could impact the school operations prompting a temporary closure of the campus.

If you receive this alert, you will be directed where to go for more information on the campus closure due to inclement weather conditions.

All emergency alerts will be followed by an all clear when the emergency is over and you can resume normal activities.
