March football update
Due to the lack of an opportunity to fully prepare student-athletes for competition, Texas Wesleyan Athletics has made the difficult decision to cancel the final two football games of the spring season.
This impacts:
- Saturday, March 27 at Oklahoma Panhandle State
- Saturday, April 10 vs. Lyon College at Farrington Field
On Feb. 10, Texas Wesleyan announced the cancellation of the first four games of the spring season due to the number of student-athletes in COVID-19-related quarantine protocols and the resulting lack of practice time. Since the announcement, practice time has been even more limited due to Texas Wesleyan’s closure during last month’s severe winter storm. Fort Worth ISD was also forced to close its facilities for repairs, leaving the football program without a place to practice or play.
Athletic Director Ricky Dotson released the following statement:
“Out of an abundance of caution, we have made the difficult decision to end our spring football season earlier than we would have liked. In addition to limited practices after COVID-19-related quarantines, our football program has also experienced untimely interruptions due to the winter storm. All in all, we've been extremely limited in our practice time and we felt that our football student-athletes have been unable to properly prepare for the physical demands of a college football season. We hope to use this time to prepare for next season, so that our student-athletes will be in the best possible situation to succeed in the fall. I feel terrible for our players and coaches, but I have no doubt that they will persevere through this time just as they have over the past year. They have remained committed to our University and steadfast in their support of the decisions regarding their season.”
