Men’s and women’s varsity wrestling latest sport coming to Texas Wesleyan
Texas Wesleyan is building on its momentum in athletics with the addition of men’s and women’s varsity wrestling. The teams are set to compete in the NAIA’s Sooner Athletic Conference beginning in the fall of 2019.
“Texas Wesleyan athletics continues to grow every day, thanks to recent successes across several of our sports,” said Ricky Dotson, athletic director. “With Texas having the fastest growing participation in high school wrestling of any state in the country, adding men’s and women’s teams to our diverse offering is a perfect next step.”
An opportunity for DFW high school students
With the addition, Texas Wesleyan brings collegiate scholarship wrestling to the DFW metroplex, becoming the second such program in the entire state on any level to offer scholarships. This will provide the student-athletes competing at more than 110 DFW public schools the chance to stay close to home with the sport they love to play.
“Wrestling is great addition to our successful athletics program,” said Frederick G. Slabach, president of Texas Wesleyan. “We think this is a wonderful opportunity for students to compete in wrestling collegiately while earning their degree in a student-first environment ideal for thriving on and off the field.”
A national search for a coach is underway, with recruiting set to begin in the spring of 2019.
