ASC writing tutors share top grammar mistakes
Do you find yourself struggling with commas?
Do you have a difficult time choosing between affect and effect?
Did you know that National Grammar Day is March 4?
National Grammar Day was established in 2008 by Martha Brockenbrough for the promotion of good grammar. In the Academic Success Center, our writing tutors take pride in the fact that they are grammar experts. This comes in handy considering that last semester there were over 500 tutoring appointments for writing. Many students struggle with writing. The ASC tutors can assist with any stage of the writing process, brainstorming, organization, formatting and grammar.
Top Grammar Mistakes:
- Commas - Use them after introductory phrases, lists of 3 or more, and after a conjunction that combines 2 complete sentences.
- Affect and effect - "Affect" is almost always a verb, and "effect" is almost always a noun.
- Use academic language in your writing. In other words, do not write in the same language you would use when conversing with a friend.
- Subject and verb agreement - Most plural subjects take verbs without an "s".
As a Texas Wesleyan student, you have free access to grammarly. Grammarly is an online spell and grammar checking application that helps users find writing issues.
