Maria Perez, senior psychology major, represented Texas Wesleyan University at Undergraduate Research Day at the Texas State Capitol April 1.

Perez presented her research titled, “Psychological Representation of Money Depends on Whether it is Gained or Lost.”  The project explored the different levels of excitement or pain participants felt whether they gained or lost different amounts of money. Jay Brown, Ph.D., professor of psychology and Perez’s sponsoring faculty, recommended Perez for the opportunity to present at the event.‌

"My experience in the Capitol was amazing,” Perez said. “I was able to learn about research that has been conducted by other undergraduate students and meet incredible people in the scientific field." 

About 75 research projects were displayed reflecting the work of undergraduate students representing 50 colleges and universities across Texas, including the University of North Texas, UT-Arlington and UT-Dallas.

Perez, Brown and Ricardo Rodriguez Ph.D., dean of the School of Natural and Social Sciences, had the opportunity to tour the capitol building, interact with state officials, attend committee hearings and attend the daily meeting of the Senate and House of Representatives. They also attended panels with STEM, social science faculty and graduate student members.‌

The purpose of Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol is to showcase the experiences of undergraduate students engaged in research for Texas legislators and the public through high-quality poster displays. The program will highlight how research conducted by undergraduate students positively impacts Texas and Texans, with the theme: Transforming Texas Through Undergraduate Research.
