The best part about theatre arts is getting to explore all the individual components of production that go into making a show. You’ll take what you learn in class and apply it in a real theatrical setting with Theatre Wesleyan, yet another jewel in Texas Wesleyan’s performing arts crown.

Played the hits in a jukebox musical 

Texas Wesleyan students performed a bevy of rock hits for Oh, What a Night!, a jukebox musical that ran for 90 minutes. Jukebox musicals like Mamma Mia!, Jersey Boys, and American Idiot are increasingly popular on Broadway and across the country – and a great way to sharpen your vocal performance skills. The production was also live streamed – so friends could watch students on stage from across the world.  

Examined ideas about race and culture in America 

Portraits in Black was a collection of monologues about Black life written to shine a light on the Black experience in Modern America. Julissa Norment, junior cast member, created content for the performance. “Having the opportunity to showcase my work has been a dream come true,” Norment said. “I’m low-key having my Lin-Manuel Miranda moment.”   

Performed a live drive-in radio play  

Texas Wesleyan theatre arts students got creative during the pandemic – including performing Vintage Hitchcock: A Live Radio Play. The double-feature live-radio play included versions of The Lodger and Sabotage, two of director Alfred Hitchcock’s early films. The project even featured vintage commercials and a drive-in movie style. Creativity is always center stage – no matter what happens.  

Reinterpreted The Simpsons 

Yes, you read that right! In Mr. Burns, A Post-Electric Play, a group of survivors came together after the collapse of civilization to re-enact a classic episode of The Simpsons. The results asked bigger questions about memory, community, art and the role of myths in our society.
