According to Thomas Jefferson, "Whenever the people are well informed, they can be trusted with their own government; that whenever things get so far wrong as to attract their notice, they may be relied on to set them to rights" (1789).
In that spirit, nearly 80 students and faculty gathered in the Science Lecture Theater on the evening of September 10 to watch what may be the only presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump ahead of the general election in November. Attendees were treated to pizza and drinks at the event and also played a form of bingo based on the responses of the two candidates.
"I was hesitant about attending," said sophomore Ellis Wamsley, "but I'm glad I did. It was interesting and informative to see and hear other student's reactions to what each candidate said."
While the debate was taking place, students were polled to gauge their reactions to candidate responses. Those responses were displayed while the debate was taking place.
The event was co-sponsored by the Texas Wesleyan Sumners Scholars, Ignite, and the Criminal Justice Club.
