Larry Smith was the head baseball coach at Texas Wesleyan from 1971 to 1977 and had a record of 299-95. They were in post season play six years and won regionals two years. The Rams were nationally ranked six of the seven years with their schedule including match-ups with TCU, Texas, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Kansas and Nebraska. In addition to their successful seasons, Coach Smith's players also achieved many accolades including several first and second team All-Americans, an invitation to play in the Pan-American games and 15 players who were drafted to professional teams.
Smith feels very blessed to have coached excellent players and was always impressed that they were great young men, as well. They represented the baseball program and Texas Wesleyan in a first-class manner. Smith is also very proud of his players for all their success after their baseball careers.
Larry owes so much to Texas Wesleyan for the success of the baseball team and certainly for the happiest time in his life. When informed of his induction, Larry said “Words can’t describe how honored I am to be inducted into the Texas Wesleyan Athletic Hall of Fame. I owe this all to my players. They are the ones that got me this great honor.”
Help celebrate Coach Larry Smith and his dedication to the Ram baseball program at the Athletic Hall of Fame on Nov. 1.
