The Texas Wesleyan Alumni Association is pleased to announce Tamika Johnson as the recipient of the 2023 Wesleyan Flame Award, which will be awarded at the Alumni Medal Dinner on Oct. 20. The Wesleyan Flame Award is presented to a current faculty or staff member whose commitment and dedication to the university and its students exemplifies the Wesleyan mission and traditions.

Tamika Johnson was born in Fort Worth and graduated from O.D. Wyatt high school. After working for her aunt's daycare in high school, she knew she was born to be a teacher. She attended Tarrant County College and earned an associate degree in child development and a certificate in childcare administration and then went to work.

In 2006, she returned to school, attending Texas Wesleyan and earned a bachelor's degree in business administration. After graduating, she was offered a full-time position at the university and has gone on to earn her master's degree in business administration as well as a master's degree in education with an emphasis on curriculum and instruction. Now, still imbued with a love for learning and teaching, she is pursuing her doctorate in education.

Tamika’s current positions are the coordinator to the Dean of Arts & Sciences and adjunct instructor of Academic Success Experience at Texas Wesleyan. Ever attune to the needs of the unique student body, she started the Rams First Mentoring program in 2021 to help and motivate students to succeed by pairing new freshmen with faculty and staff mentors. During the summer at Texas Wesleyan, she also helps coordinate the annual Chemistry Camp for area school children as well as TexPrep, where she also teaches a Leadership and Entrepreneurship class for children.

Tamika works tirelessly as an advocate for our students and campus community, and brings a sense of energy and enthusiasm to everything she does. She goes above and beyond to make Texas Wesleyan the best it can be.
