Join us for a Mitchell-Reed Community of Learners Lecture on at 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at the Bernice Coulter Templeton Art Studio.  Artists Genevieve Armstrong and Juan Cruz will be present to give and artist talk on their art exhibition, ANIMUS, curated by Tom Motley.  Brown bag lunches are welcome; light refreshments will be provided by the Office of the Provost.

From the artist and curator statements

Juan Cruz: "My artwork is made through personal, emotional responses to religious beliefs, societal issues and cultural traditions.  Oil paint and charcoal are the chosen media that best allow me to express a sentimental, passionate and aggressive style."

Genevieve Armstrong: "I am obsessed with the female figure, a subject hijacked over millennia; she has been consistently dehumanized and objectified.  While staring at hyper-erstrogenated misrepresentations of myself on billboards, magazines, art, and books I ask myself: Why is it so rare to find an image of a woman that I relate to?"

Tom Motley: "The work is about identity, individually and collectively.  Each of these artists seeks a kind of recovery, a restoration of dignity and purpose within the human body and spirit.  Their work is a conformation against personal lethargy and public complacency, a reclamation of individual integrity and communal responsibility."
