The Welch Foundation has approved a grant to Texas Wesleyan University in the amount of $30,000 for the period of June 1, 2012 to May 31, 2013.

Texas Wesleyan has received the department grant for more than 25 years, a remarkable feat for a small university. “Unlike at a larger school, every student in the program can benefit from this grant,” said Newton Hilliard, department chair of chemistry and biochemistry and professor of chemistry.

The grant will allow undergraduate chemistry students to work with faculty on close-range, independent studies. Faculty members serve as mentors for students to work one-on-one on scholarly projects – gathering data and using problem-solving skills for a hands-on scientific experience. 
The grant can be also used for a variety of other purposes, including stipends and scholarly travel.

“It’s a privilege to have this grant renewed,” said Trevor Morris, dean of the School of Natural and Social Sciences. “I believe it is recognition of the quality of work we are providing undergraduates.”
The Welch Foundation grant is especially meaningful to Hilliard, who was a Welch Scholar in graduate school. “It almost feels like coming home, “Hilliard said. “I’m proud that we can use it to support a new generation of students.”

The Welch Foundation is among the oldest and largest private funding sources for basic chemical research in the U.S. and is based in Houston. The foundation supports chemical research at colleges, universities and other educational institutions in Texas.
