After reviewing solicited feedback from the campus community, the University Board of Trustees affirmed President Slabach’s decision to remain a gun-free campus by opting out of Senate Bill 11, commonly referred to as campus carry.

During a regularly scheduled spring meeting of the Texas Wesleyan University Board of Trustees, the board affirmed University President Frederick G. Slabach’s decision to remain a gun-free campus by opting out of Senate Bill 11, also referred to as campus carry.

Senate Bill 11 allows individuals with a concealed handgun license to carry a handgun while on university campuses in Texas. The legislation stipulates that private universities may choose to opt out of the requirement, following input and consultation from the campus community.

The University’s consultation process included email feedback requests and open forums with students, faculty and staff, and discussions with the Student Government Association, Alumni Association Board and the Board of Trustees Academic Affairs and Student Life Committee.

“The feedback received from members of our campus community was overwhelmingly in favor of remaining a gun-free campus,” President Slabach said.

Texas Wesleyan will begin working to effectively communicate this decision to its constituents and visitors by the August 1, 2016 deadline.
