Goals for Student Achievement and Outcomes

TXWES Student Achievement

Texas Wesleyan University pursues its mission of providing transformational learning experiences and research opportunities to a diverse group of students to develop their full potential as individuals and as members of the world community. The University values and celebrates diversity as expressed throughout the Engage 2025 Strategic Plan and recruits students who are not only ethnically diverse but also diverse in terms of ideology, socioeconomic status, and family history of education. Providing access to higher education remains foundational to the University's culture and operation.

At Texas Wesleyan University, the personal and dedicated attention from faculty and staff continues to be a priority. The University tagline, Smaller. Smarter. speaks to this value held by the institution.  In addition to the small class size, the University strives to create a student experience grounded in high-impact and high-engagement practices. The engagement metrics, measured by regular administrations of the National Survey on Student Engagement (NSSE), serve as a second category of student achievement.

Texas Wesleyan University has a mission to develop graduates who are community and professional leaders, including preparation for graduate studies and professional careers. To that end, the University has additional measures of student achievement in the form of post-graduation activity.  These measures reflect the mission of the University.

TXWES uses the following measures to document student achievement:

Engagement

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). TXWES administered the NSSE biannually since 2016 with the most recent survey being conducted in 2024. The University administers the survey every other year to its freshmen and senior classes in the spring semester. The results from NSSE are tracked and reviewed after each administration for the engagement indicators (EIs) as well as the degree to which those students utilize opportunities that are considered to be high-impact practices (HIPs) (i.e., study abroad). NSSE provides numerous indicators of student success markers and TXWES focuses on three specific measures that align with institutional mission and campus culture: Quality of Interactions, Higher-Order Learning, and Effective Teaching Practices. On these particular measures, TXWES seniors have consistently reported EIs at or above those of our peer institution grouping.  Similarly, TXWES seniors have been within a similar range of those at peer institutions of having participated in HIP experiences. The thresholds were partially met.

  1. TXWES will continue to provide comparable reported student engagement indicators as well as high impact practices as compared to their peer institutions for each NSSE administration.
    • Connection to TXWES Mission: The co-curriculum and extracurricular activities will enhance academic learning by engaging and supporting the whole student.
      • Students will rate campus engagement indicators higher than the national norms on the NSSE.
    • Data sources: Bi-annual administration of the survey to all first-year and senior students. Peer institution data is provided by NSSE and is included in the results of each administration.
    • Thresholds: An acceptable threshold for this goal is to be within .3 effect size (engagement indicators) or 10% (high impact practices) of each of the broad category comparisons of high impact practices to peer institutions.
      • 70% of first-year students reported participating in one or more HIP compared to 58% of the National Responses in 2023 & 2024, this threshold was met for first year students. (NSSE 2024)
        • However, Seniors reported participating in one or more HIP at 76% compared to 85% nationally, this threshold was not met. (NSSE 2024)
      • Engagement Indicators were similar or significantly higher for both First-Year students and Seniors in all categories. (NSSE 2024)
Post-Graduation Activity

1. TXWES will maintain a post-graduation employment rate of 70% for undergraduate respondents to the First Destination Survey (6 months post-graduation).
