Each year, the Alumni Association offers scholarships to legacy students (students who are family of TXWES alumni). Funds raised by the Alumni Association throughout the year help support these scholarships. Joyce Watterson is a psychology major and criminal justice minor who plans to graduate in December 2023. She chose Texas Wesleyan becasue of her legacy, who happens to be her daughter. Joyce was inspired by the positive experience her daughter had and continues to have at Texas Wesleyan. Joyce's daughter recieved her Bachelor's, Master's, and is currently pursuing her Doctorate of Education degree, due to the family dynamic provided by this university.

Joyce is a first generation college student. After high school she worked, married and raised a family. Joyce says, "Now at 63 I am loving every minute (of school). Texas Wesleyan is like my extended family. It's never too late to learn and challenge yourself. I have made amazing friends and have so much respect for the professors who care for their students and truly want you to succeed. The small classes help keep the learning environment real by equipping you in a way that makes learning fun, having access to professors when you have questions and building a support system with your peers. It all works together to create knowledge and success for your future. I am grateful my daughter, my legacy, chose Texas Wesleyan. I could not be more proud of her. Watching her journey made my choice to pursue my dreams."

Joyce has grown to appreciate the art of learning, and finds she has become open to new things and ideas. She feels that she has become more assertive and confident to be able to achieve what she once believed she couldn't. Joyce hopes to inspire others, regardless of age, to continue learning.
