First community garden to open in Southeast Fort Worth on Sept. 24

09.21.2016 | By: Texas Wesleyan University
Polytechnic High School and Texas Wesleyan are teaming up to break ground on a community garden

PolyWes Gardens is pleased to announce its official ribbon cutting ceremony and kick-off to the fall planting season. The ceremony will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 2900 Avenue C and Thrall (near William James Middle School and Texas Wesleyan). The ceremony will feature free refreshments and activities for kids.

PolyWes Gardens is a community garden that goes far beyond providing locals with fresh fruits and vegetables. The non-profit, founded by Kimberly McLean, a recent Texas Wesleyan alumna, has already begun works to improve the Polytechnic High School campus.

McLean began PolyWes Gardens as a way to empower residents to improve individual health, education, job skill training and improve the average standard of living by bringing resources, services and enthusiasm to the Southeast Fort Worth community.

“I would always be driving to the (Texas Wesleyan) campus and I’d see that on almost every block there is an abandoned lot or someone in need of some type of leg up. I just got tired of wishing I could help and decided to start helping,” McLean said.

After months of working to establish the garden and build a diverse portfolio of services to the community, the urban farm is proud to begin serving the area.

Members of the community of all ages are welcome to come and learn about the many ways in which PolyWes Gardens will serve the community and to sign up to become a volunteer.
