Finding a job can be one of the most stressful things you do. From resumes, to cover letters to how you interview, there are a lot of ways to make simple mistakes. Each of these are also an opportunity to look better than the competition. Follow the tips below and be sure to visit with Career Services and you’ll be on your way to getting the job you want.

Don’t rely on the internet for good advice

Sure, you can check out job search infographics on Pinterest, but why would you? You have access to something better - Career Services. Their job is to help you get a job. They can provide guidance and advice based on your resume and where you want it to take you. And if you aren’t even sure what field you want to work in, they can help with that too.

Start early

Job searching can take a long time and it involves a few aspects. Start all of them early. Resumes, cover letters, interviewing techniques – start working on these well before you plan to get an interview.

Look your best

Great, they like your resume and want to interview you. You now have a foot in the door, but that doesn’t help if you aren’t wearing the right shoes. Being well dressed for your interview shows you are professional and are taking the interview seriously. It also helps people imagine you in that role if you’re already dressed for the job. Did you know Career Services has clothes you can have for an interview?

Study for the interview like it’s a test

Because it is a test. Yeah, you don’t know what questions you’ll be asked, but prepare for them. Make a list of questions you could be asked, then write your answers.

Don’t forget to say thank you

Write down everyone’s name that was a part of your interview. The next day, mail them a hand-written thank you card. It may make the difference between you and another candidate – it certainly doesn’t hurt your chances.
