World premiere performance highlights music department's season

09.26.2013 | By: Texas Wesleyan University

The Music Department offers a rich and varied range of programs to the Texas Wesleyan community each year, and 2013-14 will be no different.

In addition to performaces by all of the university's large- and small-group ensembles, the department has a several special concerts scheduled, including the world premiere of three works by London-based contemporary composer Gregory Rose.

A unique experience

“It will expand your musical horizons,” said John Fisher, professor of music. “It’s a very modern approach to the interpretation of music and is something that will not be repeated for some time."

The performance, scheduled for Oct. 24 at Martin Hall, will include Avebury Stone Circles, a cycle of seven songs for soprano and piano inspired by the ancient stone circle at Avebury, England. It will be performed by Sure Eloff, soprano, and Fisher.

Rose, who will travel from England to attend the concert, will also be debuting High Flight, a piece for soprano and flute, and The Obelisk, composed for chamber winds.

If you want to hear music that you may not have heard before, Fisher recommends the unique experience this performance offers.

"In the concert halls of the world, when you think about classical music, the majority of what you will hear is written by people who are long since deceased," said Fisher. "This man is alive and well and his music is very modern."

Semester full of opportunities

The music department will also be performing The Golden Baroque on Oct. 15, and the  , which highlights up-and-coming chamber musicians, will be held on Nov. 15.

The ensemble performances this semester include Chamber Singers, Women's Chorus, Men's Chorus, Wesleyan Chorale and Opera Scenes Workshop, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Combo, and Brass Ensemble.
