The Faye C. Goostree Women's Symposium, established in 1982, is an annual event that brings dynamic, educational and inspiring guest speakers to discuss various and relevant topics related to women. Over the years, the symposium has featured notable figures such as Lila Cockrell, Sarah Weddington, Ann Richards and Opal Lee, covering topics ranging from leadership and politics to health and the arts.

Rev. Yevette Christy ’09 is an ordained United Methodist Elder and a survivor of active drug addiction, 18 years as a prostitute and giving birth to the son of her trafficker. She is currently pursuing a Doctor of Ministry degree at Brite Divinity School, TCU. In 2021, she founded The Reclamation Project, a non-profit concerned with socioeconomic change and resources for survivors of human trafficking. Rev. Christy recently completed her autobiography entitled, “/Hôr/?”

Her autobiography tells her powerful story of overcoming trauma, abuse, addiction and a life in prostitution. After 30 years of hardship, she became an Elder in the United Methodist Church, using her experience to advocate for change and challenge systemic oppression. Her book is a testament to resilience, aiming to inspire others and shift perspectives on women who have been pushed to the margins.

Rev. Christy’s lecture at the Faye C. Goostree Women’s Symposium tackled a difficult but essential topic—confronting the trauma, abuse and systemic oppression that many women face. While her story was deeply personal and, at times, painful to hear, it was also a testament to resilience and transformation. By sharing her journey from hardship to empowerment, she encourages women to reclaim their narratives and challenge societal labels. Her message was not just about struggle but about hope, strength and the power of perseverance, leaving the audience both moved and inspired to advocate for change.
