A Legacy of Leadership and Friendship: Two Deans, One Enduring Impact
At Texas Wesleyan University, leadership is often defined not only by titles held, but by the relationships built and the lives transformed along the way. This spring marks a meaningful moment in the university’s history as two long-time colleagues and friends—Dr. Carlos A. Martinez and Dr. Ricardo E. Rodriguez—step into new chapters of their careers, each leaving behind a legacy that has helped shape generations of students and educators.
After more than two decades as Dean of the School of Education, Dr. Martinez is transitioning from his leadership role while continuing to support the university during this period of change. Since joining Texas Wesleyan in 2001, he has guided the School of Education through remarkable growth by expanding programs, increasing enrollment, and strengthening accreditation and academic quality. His leadership secured more than $8 million in grant funding to support teacher preparation and student success initiatives, advancing the university’s mission to serve both students and the broader community. At every step, his work has been grounded in a deep belief in education as a force for transformation.
Alongside him, Dr. Rodriguez is also beginning a new chapter, transitioning from his role as Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences to return to the faculty. Dr. Rodriguez’s journey at Texas Wesleyan spans more than three decades, beginning as a faculty member in chemistry and evolving into an academic leader. From department chair to dean, his influence has been felt across disciplines, establishing programs, mentoring faculty, and advancing scientific education. A respected scholar and educator, he has contributed extensively to research, secured more than 120 grants supporting outreach and student opportunities, and inspired countless students through both the classroom and community engagement. His recent recognition as the 2026 Guardian of the Golden Shears further reflects the lasting impact of his service.
While Dr. Martinez and Dr. Rodriguez serve as Deans for different areas of study, they share a common story of friendship and trusted colleagues. Over the years, they have collaborated across schools, supporting institutional priorities, and helping guide the university through periods of change and opportunity. Their careers have grown alongside one another, shaped by a shared commitment to students and a belief in the power of higher education to change lives.
“This is a moment to celebrate two extraordinary leaders whose impact on Texas Wesleyan is immeasurable,” said Dr. Emily W. Messer, president of Texas Wesleyan University. “Carlos and Ric have dedicated their careers to ensuring our students are known, supported and prepared to lead. Their legacy is not only found in the programs they have helped led, but in the lives they have transformed and therefore have strengthen communities where our alumni serve.”
That sentiment is echoed by Provost Hector Quintanilla, a long-time colleague and friend who has worked alongside both leaders throughout their careers. “I have had the privilege of growing alongside Carlos and Ric at this university,” he said. “Their leadership, friendship and shared commitment to our mission have shaped Texas Wesleyan in lasting ways. While their roles are changing, their presence and influence will continue to guide us forward.”
Now, as they transition together into new roles, their connection to Texas Wesleyan remains as strong. Dr. Martinez will continue to lend his expertise during the leadership transition, while Dr. Rodriguez returns to the classroom where his passion for teaching and mentorship first began.
Texas Wesleyan celebrates both leaders not just for what they have accomplished, but for the legacy they leave behind, which is one defined by service, scholarship, and a lasting dedication to the university community.
