Texas Wesleyan Joins Fort Worth Community for Juneteenth Walk for Freedom

Despite rainy skies, the Texas Wesleyan community proudly showed up on June 19 to participate in the annual Opal Lee Walk for Freedom, honoring Juneteenth and the enduring legacy of Opal Lee.
The 2.5-mile walk symbolizes the 2.5 years it took for news of emancipation and the enforcement of freedom to reach enslaved people in Texas after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Each year, the event brings together hundreds of community members to honor freedom, unity and the ongoing pursuit of equality.
Texas Wesleyan's connection to Opal Lee runs deep. Known as the "Grandmother of Juneteenth," Lee has long been a champion for the recognition of Juneteenth as a national holiday. Her daughter and granddaughter are both Texas Wesleyan alumni, and in 2021, the university awarded Lee an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters in recognition of her lifelong advocacy and impact on the community.
This year, the Texas Wesleyan Rams proudly joined hundreds of participants in downtown Fort Worth to support Lee's mission and commemorate the significance of Juneteenth.
For Mahki Whitney, a Texas Wesleyan football player, participating in events like the Walk for Freedom is an opportunity to give back and lead by example.
"It's important for student-athletes to get involved in events like this because people look up to us," Whitney said. "Showing up, supporting the community and being part of something bigger is a great way to make a positive impact."
Vernon Wright, president of the Texas Wesleyan Alumni Association Board of Directors, was among the Rams who participated in the Walk for Freedom. As a Texas Wesleyan alumnus and community leader, Wright emphasized the importance of engaging with the Fort Worth community while recognizing those who have paved the way for future generations.
"Events like this strengthen our connection to the Fort Worth community while honoring the legacy of leaders like Opal Lee," Wright said.
Despite the rain, the spirit of the event remained strong as the Texas Wesleyan community came together to celebrate freedom, reflect on history and honor one of Fort Worth's most influential leaders.
As Opal Lee often reminds us, "July 4 freed the land. Juneteenth freed the people." Through participation in events like the Walk for Freedom, Texas Wesleyan continues to strengthen its commitment to community engagement while honoring the people and moments that have shaped our nation's history.
