Texas Wesleyan Smash Ultimate Team Makes History with First Conference Championship

The Texas Wesleyan Esports Super Smash Bros. Ultimate team made history this spring by capturing its first-ever conference championship, marking a major milestone for one of the program’s longest-standing competitive teams. After finishing last spring with a difficult 1–7 record, the Rams completed an impressive turnaround this season, finishing 7–1 and claiming the conference title in the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE) Varsity Plus conference for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (SSBU).

Competing against dozens of teams across multiple groups, the championship represented more than just competitive success — it showcased the growth, resilience and culture the program has built over time.Players credited the season’s success to hard work, accountability and the strong sense of community within the team. While many collegiate Esports programs focus heavily on gameplay, Texas Wesleyan players emphasized the importance of supporting one another both in and outside of competition.
“The brotherhood that we share with each other was one of the biggest reasons behind the team’s success,” one SSBU player said.

Team members explained that they regularly spend time together beyond practices and matches, checking in on one another personally and academically while building a culture centered on trust and encouragement.Several players reflected on how meaningful the championship was after years of pursuing the goal. One competitor shared that the team had previously reached a championship match but fell short, making this season’s victory even more rewarding.Others pointed to the discipline and preparation established early in the season as a key factor in the team’s success. Before focusing on gameplay, players said the team worked to establish expectations, accountability and strong fundamentals.

The championship also highlighted the passion players have for SSBU and Esports as a whole. Team members said their shared love of gaming motivated them to continue improving while supporting one another through challenges during the season.
Beyond competition, players said the Esports program gave them a sense of belonging and helped them grow both personally and academically. Many described the team as “a second family” and credited the experience with helping them build confidence, leadership skills and lasting friendships.

Looking ahead, the team hopes the championship helps establish a winning culture for future Rams interested in joining the program. Players encouraged future competitors to pursue their passions, build strong relationships with teammates and take advantage of opportunities that could shape their future.

For Texas Wesleyan Esports, the championship was more than just a trophy — it was a statement about the dedication, perseverance and community that continue to define the program.
