Mike Jeffcoat named SAC Coach of the Year

The Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) announced its 2016 Baseball All-Conference team and top individual awards as voted upon by the league's nine head coaches. No. 22 Texas Wesleyan placed seven on the All-Conference team while three earned Gold Glove awards and Head Coach Mike Jeffcoat was named SAC Coach of the Year. 

Mike Jeffcoat - SAC Coach of the Year

This marks Coach Jeffcoat's second Conference Coach of the Year Award (he was named Red River Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2007). So far this season, he has guided the Rams to the SAC Regular Season title at 19-5 in league play as well as an overall record of 39-17 and a top-25 national ranking. In 15 seasons at the helm, Jeffocat is the program's all-time leader in coaching wins with a record of 482-341-1 (.586).

Conference standings after SAC Tournament

Following the SAC Tournament, the Rams are awaiting the May 13 announcement of the 45 qualifiers for the NAIA National Championship Opening Round. The Opening Round features nine, five-team double-elimination tournaments which will play out May 17-20.

During the SAC Tournament, the Rams reached the SAC semifinals before being eliminated in a back-and-forth 10-8 decision against 24th ranked Wayland Baptist University.

Seven players named to All-Conference teams and three win Golden Glove awards

Casey Moses, Alex Gudac, and Zach Aitken were named to the 1st-team while Garrett Crook, Jonathan Bravo, Erick Qeusada, and Stephen Yancey were named to the 2nd-team. James Ziegler (1B), Casey Moses (SS), and Erick Quesada (RF) all earned Gold Glove awards. 

Zach Aitken - 1st-team All-SAC - Starting Pitcher

Aitken is a senior right-handed pitcher from Missouri City, TX. He leads the Rams in innings pitched (88.2) and strikeouts (82) while holding a record of 8-4 and an ERA of 3.35. Opponents are batting just .247 against him. He has made 15 starts and posted six complete games including a shutout in a 3-0 conference win over Bacone.

Alex Gudac - 1st-team All-SAC - Centerfield

Gudac is a junior centerfielder from West Jordan, UT. In his first season with the Rams he is batting .362 with two home runs and 28 RBI. He has also posted a school record eight triples on the year, scored 40 runs, and stolen 15 bases. While showing incredible range in centerfield, he has made just one error in 120 chances for a fielding percentage of .992.

Casey Moses - 1st-team All-SAC - Gold Glove - Shortstop

Moses is a junior shortstop from North Las Vegas, NV. He currently leads the team with a batting average of .372 to go with two home runs and 36 RBI. He has posted 17 doubles, three triples, and scored 44 runs. He also holds a slugging percentage of .533 and an on base percentage of .436. His walk-off home run against USAO sealed a 2-1 series win over the Drovers and proved to be the tie-breaker in the SAC regular season standings. At shortstop he made just 10 errors in 208 chances (.952).

Jonathan Bravo - 2nd-team All-SAC - Second Base

Bravo is a senior second baseman from Sugar Land, TX. This season he is batting .341 with two home runs and 21 RBI. He has scored 25 runs and stolen nine bases in 10 attempts. In his three-year career with the Rams he is a .309 hitter with seven home runs and 64 RBI in 133 games played.

Garrett Crook - 2nd-team All-SAC - Gold Glove - Catcher

Crook is a junior catcher from Burleson, TX. He is batting .234 with a home run and 13 RBI and was invaluable behind the plate where he made just five errors in 338 chances (.985). He threw out 19-of-41 base runners for a percentage of .463 and managed a pitching staff that ranked second in the conference and 26th nationally in ERA at 3.55.

Erick Quesada - 2nd-team All-SAC - Gold Glove - Right Field

Quesada is a senior right fielder from Cottonwood, AZ. In his first season with the Rams, he is batting .369 with a home run and 30 RBI. He holds a slugging percentage of .482 and an on base percentage of .408 and has scored 34 runs and stolen seven bases. Quesada has yet to make an error in 56 chances in right field.

Stephen Yancey - 2nd-team All-SAC - Starting Pitcher

Yancey is a sophomore right-handed pitcher from North Richland Hills, TX. This season he has gone 8-1 with a 3.51 ERA and 59 strikeouts against just 16 walks in 59 innings pitched while opponents are hitting just .259 against him. Yancey's lone loss came in his first start of the year against Jarvis Christian. Since then he has made 12 appearances and gone 8-0 with a 3.16 ERA.

James Ziegler - Gold Glove - First Base

Ziegler is a junior first baseman from Chandler, AZ. In his first season with the Rams, he is batting .318 with a team-high four home runs and 30 RBI. In 355 chances at first base he made just six errors for a fielding percentage of .983. He ranks 21st nationally with 7.636 putouts per game and 24th with 8.045 chances per game.
