February 7 is National HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. This day serves to acknowledge how HIV disproportionately affects Black people and engage with the community about prevention and treatment. This year's theme is Engage, Educate, Empower: Uniting to End HIV/AIDS in Black Communities. This week, Student Diversity and Inclusion Programs is hosting two discussion events on the Texas Wesleyan Campus. Both events are open to the campus community to attend and engage in the conversation regarding HIV/AIDs in the Black community. Wed. Feb. 7th: HIV Rapid Testing with Author Jessica Glaspie Join SDIP, CAN Community Health, and the Arlington Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. for a closer look at how HIV/AIDS impacts Black women. Jessica Glaspie, author of 'Life, Love, and HIV: A Memoir,' will share her personal experience in contracting HIV and discuss the advocacy work she does. CAN Community Health will provide on-site HIV Rapid Testing, and there will be a resource fair with community partners. Rapid Testing will start at 4:30 p.m. outside the Martin Center. The guest speaker, Jessica Glaspie, will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Science Lecture Theater. Thursday, Feb. 8: Fighting HIV in Men of Color Join the Student Diversity and Inclusion Programs for this month's RamServe Thursday, collaborating with the AIDS Outreach Center (AOC). Participants will gather in the Student Activities Suite to assemble condom packs while an AOC HIV educator discusses prevention and education about HIV/AIDS among Black men. This event will take place 12:30-1:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be available. Do not miss these opportunities to be part of the conversation regarding HIV/AIDs prevention.
