Sociology Internship

The internship is a major part of your learning experience here in the sociology program at Texas Wesleyan. The internship allows you the opportunity to experience working in a sociology-related field and put into practice the concepts you are now familiar with. You will work different positions within an organization in order to experience the variety of ways in which the organization interacts with, and influences, their clients, and vice versa.

Though the majority of our sociology majors are interested in the non-profit sector and helping others, you are not limited to the non-profit sector in your sociology degree. The whole point of this semester-long internship is to experience the area in which you think you would like to make your career.

As you undertake the internship, you will experience the world of sociology outside in the "real world" and be able to connect the classroom learning that you have expereinced up to this point. You will be able to develop a deeper understanding of the issues present and ways in which you may help to solve some of the problems. This is an exciting opportunity and one that students gain much from.

How can I prepare?

The sooner you start looking into your options, the better. Start thinking about what interests you most in the socioology field, where you would like to go with your career. Approaching organizations about the possibility of interning there allows you to see the organization, the people you will be working with and gives a sense of accomplishment in finding your position. This is invaluable experience. Think about taking your internship in your junior year to give yourself time to work out whether your interests align with reality.

Allow yourself time to work through some of the questions you may have. Your faculty advisor is always available to discuss your options with you. The majority of our students find somewhere they are interested in exploring and approach the organization themselves. Your faculty advisor will need to approve the placement and detials prior to you starting.

How do I find an internship?

What are you interested in? Start looking at organizations in the field that interest you. They may already offer internships or you can talk to them about creating one. After you find an internship opportunity, talk to your faculty advisor and have them approve your choice.

Not sure where to look? The sociology department has built relationships with different organizations in the area and can help you find an approved internship.

Past students have found internships working at local YMCAs, CPS, Safe Haven, Women's Shelters, even the local HOA.
