About Professor Helvey

After 31 years of experience in education, I retired to continue working to help school leaders develop the capacity for change. I have served as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, athletic director, director of finance and technology, assistant superintendent for student services and finally superintendent of schools in Allen ISD where I retired at the end of 2013. I continue my journey at Texas Wesleyan University. In addition to my university role, I am a partner in the education consulting firm N2 learning L.L.C. We provide customized facilitation services to support school transformation. This work is an excellent complement to education leadership at Texas Wesleyan.

As a school leader, I successfully led numerous change processes in strategic planning, curriculum and professional development, master planning, technology planning, program analysis for budget development, and tax ratification election. I was part of the North Texas Regional Consortium of school districts that adopted the Visioning Document, Creating a New Vision for Public Education in Texas, as the framework for school transformation. This group initiated the statewide movement to examine the assessment system that ultimately resulted in the passage of HB 5, which drastically reduced the number of required state assessments and provided more flexibility for student college and career choices.

My wife Sheena and I have four daughters and four grandchildren. We enjoy our family, traveling, hiking, golf, fishing and being active.

Research

My work is an extension of my doctoral studies in production-function research in K-12 public schools. I am also involved in school transformation efforts through the development of networks of exceptional school principal's through "The Principal's Institute." I also work with school districts in areas of school rezoning, strategic and long-range planning, and program evaluation.
